The coin toss is an important part of every football game. A winning coin toss can help set the tone early, or, if the winner chooses to have the ball first in the second half, help start the second half well. Similarly, a winning Super Bowl coin toss bet can set a foundation for a winning evening of betting on the big game.
When it comes to betting on things like the Super Bowl national anthem, Super Bowl Gatorade color, and Super Bowl coin toss, the idea is not–or should not be, at least–to roll in the cash.
That said, we all want to win all of our bets, whether they are large, small, serious, or frivolous.
Is there anything from Super Bowl coin toss history that might provide some helpful insight to make this year’s coin toss betting pick less of a… coin toss? (I’ll see myself out.)

Super Bowl 58 Coin Toss Betting Odds
Today, the Kansas City Chiefs will meet the San Francisco 49ers at Super Bowl LVIII at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas (6:30 pm ET, CBS). It will be the Chiefs’ fourth Super Bowl appearance in five seasons and their sixth overall, while it will be the 49ers’ second appearance under head coach Kyle Shanahan and the eighth in franchise history.
When the Chiefs and 49ers faced off in Super Bowl LIV four years ago, the 49ers called and won the toss, with their call of heads proving to be the correct call. Kansas City, however, got the win that mattered most, scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth as they rallied for a 31-20 victory.
Will they make the same call this time year? BetOnline, which is one of the best sportsbooks for betting on the Super Bowl, has several Super Bowl coin toss betting markets.

Who Will Call the Coin Toss at the Super Bowl in 2024?
Knowing which team will call the Super Bowl coin toss might not influence your picks, but it is helpful information to know.
Each year, the designated “away” team calls the Super Bowl coin toss. The NFL alternates “home” and “away” designations between conferences each year, and last year, the Kansas City Chiefs were the designated away team and called the toss prior to their Super Bowl 57 matchup with the Philadelphia Eagles.
The Chiefs are back in the big game this year, but the NFC champion 49ers will call the Super Bowl 58 coin toss at Allegiant Stadium.
Who Won the 2023 Super Bowl Coin Toss?
In Super Bowl 57, which took place on February 12, 2023 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona, the Kansas City Chiefs called tails. The coin landed on tails, therefore tails won and the Chiefs won the Super Bowl coin toss.
And for the first time since Super Bowl XLVIII (48) when the Seattle Seahawks routed the Denver Broncos, the coin toss winner went on to lift the Lombardi Trophy as the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in a 38-35 thriller.
In a wild game in Glendale, the Eagles led 24-14 at halftime, but Super Bowl MVP Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs rallied in the second half and scored the championship-winning points with mere seconds remaining via a Harrison Butker field goal.
Most Recent Super Bowl Coin Toss Winner: Tails
- Most Recent Toss Winner to Win the Super Bowl: Kansas City Chiefs (Super Bowl LVII)
- Longest Streak: Heads (five – Super Bowl XLIII in 2009 to Super Bowl XLVII in 2013)
- Longest Tails Streak: four (three times – Super Bowl XXXII in 1998 to Super Bowl XXXV in 2001, Super Bowl XXXVII in 2003 to Super Bowl XL in 2006, and Super Bowl XLVIII in 2014 to Super Bowl LI in 2017)
Super Bowl Coin Toss History and Trends
When there are two sides to the coin and therefore only two possible outcomes, one side is unlikely to have too much of an edge over time. And that is the case, as tails holds a 30-27 over heads ahead of the upcoming Super Bowl matchup.
With tails winning 30 times in 57 Super Bowls, it has come out on top 52.6 percent of the time, with heads winning 47.4 percent of the time.
With tails getting the win last year to break up a brief run of consecutive wins for heads, tails has been the winning Super Bowl coin toss result seven times in the last ten editions of the big game.
Recent Super Bowl Results Favor Coin Toss Losers
The 49ers have won the Super Bowl coin toss five times and went on to win the game four times, with the only loss coming in their previous matchup with the Chiefs four years ago.
The Chiefs have won the toss twice, going on to win the game last year and losing to the Bucs in Super Bowl LV three years ago.
Both all-time and recent Super Bowl coin toss historical trends heavily favor the toss loser.
Even with the Chiefs winning the toss and the game last year, the Super Bowl coin toss winner has gone on to lift the trophy only 25 times in 57 Super Bowls (43.9%).
If you intend to wait until after the toss to bet on the Super Bowl spread or potentially hedge via live betting based on the coin toss winner or loser, the coin toss winner has covered only 26 times (45.6%).
Last year, the Chiefs, who were 1.5-point underdogs, covered the spread by winning outright against the Eagles.
