Few days and events in sports and entertainment generate as much fanfare as the Super Bowl and Super Bowl Sunday. But Super Bowl Sunday is just as much about the entertainment aspect, and that includes the Super Bowl national anthem.
The game itself, which will be played between the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas this year, is the highlight for many people.
For others, the highlight is the Super Bowl ads, which are always a hot topic. For some, it is the Super Bowl Gatorade shower. And for others, it’s the Super Bowl performers and performances.
Betting on the Super Bowl isn’t just about the serious stuff. Sure, the most interest and money centers around betting on the result of the Super Bowl matchup or Super Bowl props related to the action on the field.
But in addition to Super Bowl Gatorade color betting, Super Bowl national anthem betting is part of the less serious action you can get in on for the final game of the NFL season. Whether it is to see a favorite performer or a memorable performance, people will be watching.
Country Legend McEntire to be This Year’s Super Bowl National Anthem Singer
For the fourth year in a row, the Super Bowl national anthem will have a country touch.
Before the 49ers and the Chiefs get things going in today’s Super Bowl 58 matchup, country music legend (and actress) Reba McEntire will perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” at Allegiant Stadium. McEntire is one of the most recognizable names and faces in country music, and along with being a highly decorated singer, starred in the eponymous hit sitcom Reba for six seasons from 2001 to 2007.
In the history of the Super Bowl, the anthem has been performed at every game but one, to date.
At Super Bowl XI, held at the Rose Bowl on January 9, 1977–the earliest Super Bowl date in the game’s history–singer Vikki Carr sang “America the Beautiful” instead of “The Star-Spangled Banner.”
Last year, country star Chris Stapleton performed the national anthem before the Chiefs defeated the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57 at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
With a time of around two minutes and one second, Stapleton’s 2023 performance just hit the over at sportsbooks around the world. Ahead of the performance, the anthem over/under was set at 119.5 seconds.

Do Previous National Anthem Performances Offer a Clue?
Do any previous performances provide a clue on how long the national anthem will be at the Super Bowl this year? In a word, no.
With respect to any other performances, none have the same viewership that the Super Bowl will have.
And with an event like the Super Bowl, you are likely to see a performance that fits the occasion. With that in mind, betting the over makes the most sense.
If you are looking at recent Super Bowl national anthem performances to try to get an idea of how long Stapleton will sing, you will see that the shortest was one minute and 30 seconds by Billy Joel and the longest was two minutes and 36 seconds by Alicia Keys.
A pretty standard length appears to be one minute and 55 seconds, so Stapleton’s performance last year was several seconds longer the standard.
Super Bowl National Anthem Betting Over/Under Results from the Past 17 Years
- Overs: 8
- Unders: 8
- Pushes: 1
Ultimately, unless you have insider access–and even if you do–Super Bowl national anthem betting is pure guesswork.
While some artists seem very comfortable with it and have the skill and range to perform “The Star-Spangled Banner” skillfully, others seem to prefer to stick with a more basic approach. Not everyone can be Whitney Houston or Faith Hill, whose performances were so good they became profitable recordings.
What Kind of Anthem Odds Can You Bet On?
When it comes to anthem betting, the classic bet is on the length of the performance.
Betting the over/under on how long the national anthem will be is the most popular betting option, but many books offer other interesting options as well.
In addition to the length of the performance, some sportsbooks will be creative and offer a prop of whether any word will be forgotten or omitted.
It is a simple yes/no prop that usually heavily skews to the “no” side. No one wants to look bad on national TV and be known for one of the worst national anthem performances.
In the age of the internet, social media, and smartphones, an embarrassing moment can become a meme in an instant and live on for days, weeks, or even years.
Some sportsbooks might also offer odds on the following:
- Which player is shown first during the anthem?
- Which coach is shown first during the anthem?
- Will anyone cry during the national anthem?
This year, BetOnline has multiple such options for Super Bowl 58, including one featuring the sports and entertainment crossover currently dominating the headlines, the relationship between megastar musician Taylor Swift and Chiefs tight end and future Hall of Famer Travis Kelce.
- Taylor Swift to be shown first during the national anthem -135
- Jason Kelce to be shown first during the national anthem +120
- Both to be shown at the same time (split screen or together) +350
Swift (-280 to not be shown), her prolific pass-catching boyfriend (-175 to be shown sooner than Christian McCaffrey), and/or her potential future brother-in-law may or may not be shown on camera, but waterworks of some level are expected to take place during McEntire’s anthem performance.
- Someone to cry during the national anthem -200
- No crying during the national anthem +150

This year’s Super Bowl halftime show will be headlined by eight-time Grammy Award-winning R&B singer Usher, and along with McEntire’s national anthem performance, Post Malone will sing “America the Beautiful” and Andra Day will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” with both songs performed in American Sign Language (ASL) by Anjel Pinero.
BetUS has over/under betting odds for the “America the Beautiful” and “Lift Every Voice and Sing” performances, as well as several other markets for Post Malone’s performance.
“America the Beautiful” Over/Under Odds – How Long Will Post Malone’s Performance Be?
- Over 110.5 seconds (one minute, 51 seconds or more) -120
- Under 110.5 seconds (one minute, 50 seconds or fewer) -120
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” Over/Under Odds – How Long Will Andra Day’s Performance Be?
- Over 131.5 seconds (two minutes, 12 seconds or more) -125
- Under 131.5 seconds (two minutes, 11 seconds or fewer) -115
While many will watch the upcoming Super Bowl national anthem to see one of their favorite performers or to soak up a little patriotic fanfare, others will be watching to see if their Super Bowl bets have a winning start.
