Playoff Implications
As it stands before this game, the Avalanche are tied with the Dallas Stars for first place in the Central Division, both two points ahead of the Minnesota Wild. However, the Stars have just two games remaining, while the Avs play tonight along with two more games. Colorado controls their own destiny, and can win their division by simply winning out.
The Edmonton Oilers are two points behind the Vegas Golden Knights for first place in the Pacific Division, both of whom only have two games remaining. The Oilers are 3 points ahead of the Los Angeles Kings who only have one game remaining.
This means the Oilers have locked in the the No. 2 seed in the Pacific, with their hearts still set on the top spot. Vegas plays the Kraken tonight at home and Thursday in Seattle, so a win for the Golden Knights will clinch the division if the Oilers can’t get the victory tonight in Denver.
Both teams are competing for the No. 1 seed in their division, but the overall No. 1 Seed in the West is still up for grabs as well. All three teams are still competing for more home playoff games as the Conference Champion.

Previous Head to Head Matchups
In two games this season, the Avalanche hold a 2-0 record against the Oilers, but it could just as easily have swung the other way.
For starters, both games have gone into OT. The Avs won 3-2 on January 7th in Edmonton and 6-5 on February 19th in Denver. In both of those games, the Oilers had a lead going into the 3rd period.
In January, the Oilers’ Zach Hyman scored in the 1st and 2nd periods to give the Oilers a 2-0 lead, only for Nathan MacKinnon and Brad Hunt to tie the game in the 3rd, and have Cale Makar score the winner in OT.
In similar fashion in February, Edmonton jumped out to a 1-0 lead after the 1st. They extended that lead to 3-0 early in the second, but only led 4-2 at the 2nd intermission. The Avalanche went on to outscore the Oilers 3-1 in the 3rd period to force OT, where Mikko Rantanen secured a winner less than 30 seconds from going to a shootout.
Avalanche vs. Oilers Picks and Props
I cannot bring myself to find a side on this game, although I would expect the Oilers to come out with some fire. After choking away multiple goal leads in both games, you would think the Oilers have had this one circled for a while, especially given the seeding implications.
Cale Makar is not expected to play for the Avs, hurting their defensive line against this electric Oiler’s offense. Colorado has won their last 5 and Edmonton their last 7, so someone’s streak will come to an end tonight.
Alas, I will not be betting on the side or total, but I have targeted a couple player props.
Mikko Rantanen over 3.5 SOGs (-145) DraftKings
Mikko Rantanen has been ripping the puck on net recently, and historically does so often against the Oilers.
In his last 5 regular season games against Edmonton, Rantenen has recorded 4, 9, 4, 5, and 3 Shots on Goal. In two games against the Oilers this season, Mikko has had 17 total shot attempts and is averaging 6.5 SOGs.
As of recently, he has gone over this number in 4 of his last 5, 8 of his last 10, and 12 of his last 15. He plays on the first line with MacKinnon and Evan Rodrigues, so he will be the second option to shoot if MacKinnon has some extra defensive attention. Rantanen is also on the 1st PP unit without Makar, so his shots are there for the taking.
While he averages 6.9 shot attempts on the season, he’s putting up closer to 10 attempts in his last 10 games, including a game with 17 attempts (8 on goal), two games with 13 attempts, and two other games with double digit attempts (11 and 10).
The volume is there, so I like Rantanen to get 4 SOGs for us tonight. As always, shop for the best line that is available to you. These odds are -148 on BetOnline and -150 on BetOnline
Stuart Skinner over 28.5 Saves (-120) BetOnline
Update: Skinner’s line is over 28.5 saves at -120 on BetOnline. This will be a 2 unit play for me. Risking 2.4u to win 2u.
Now like our Saros prop, I have yet to find this on the betting board, and unfortunately there is no confirmation that he is in net. However, everything points to him being in the crease tonight.
In one game against the Avalanche, Skinner saved 43 of 46 shot attempts in an overtime loss. The Oilers were up 2-0 after two periods, and failed to score the rest of the way.
The Avalanche offense is phenomenal, and they love to pepper the net. They average just over 33 Shots per game, and have put up 46 and 40 against Edmonton. I expect the Avalanche to fire plenty of shots tonight, and I like Skinner to stop most of them.
Again, this number is not quite out, but I’d be comfortable playing it up to 35 at at reasonable price. The Avalanche are playing for the top seed in the Central Division, so I expect them to put up close to 40 shots on goal.
