The Boston Bruins with take on the New Jersey Devils in an Eastern Conference matchup on Tuesday night. The Bruins started the season on fire, and while they have slowed down recently, they are still one of the top teams in the league. The Devils on the other hand, despite having the number one pick Jack Hughes and some big offseason acquisitions still have not found a way to string wins together and sit near the bottom of the league.
Boston Bruins
The Bruins have collected 29 points so far this season with their 12-3-5 record. They have dropped their last two home games after giving up goals in the last minute of the third period to eventually lose in shootouts. Boston is favored in this game but with just a –140 line currently.
Leading the way for the Bruins so far early in the season has been their entire top line of David Pastrnak, Brad Marchand, and Patrice Bergeron. Marchand and Pastrnak are both in the top five in points in the league while David Pastrnak is leading the league in goals.
Both Patrice Bergeron and Jake Debrusk will be traveling with the team to New Jersey coming off injury while defenseman Torey Krug is still on the Injury reserve list. Halak and Rask have both been great for the Bruins, but the team’s real problems have come in overtime and shootouts where they already have five losses. Look for the Bruins to stay aggressive near the end of this game to close it out as efficiently as possible.
The Bruins are averaging 3.5 goals per game while allowing just 2.45. The team is in the top five in the league for goals allowed and can beat anyone in the NHL when they are playing at the top of their ability.
New Jersey Devils
The Devils just cannot seem to find a way to get in the winning column yet again this season. Despite picking up Jack Hughes, P.K. Subban, Wayne Simmons, and already having Taylor Hall on their roster, the Devils sit at 7-8-4. They are looking to gain some chemistry between the new teammates and start stringing some wins together.
Leading the team has been both Taylor Hall and Kyle Palmieri. Hall has the most assists and points on the team while Palmieri leads them in goals with seven. The Devils need these two to step it up even more and build momentum on their offense as they are averaging just 2.58 goals per game while allowing 3.47.
The Devils are coming off two straight wins over the Penguins and the Canadiens, they would love to pick up a win at home tonight against one of the NHL’s top teams while they have been struggling to put together a three-game winning streak.
In net for the Devils tonight will be Mackenzie Blackwood who is 7-4-3 this season. The 22-year-old has secured himself a spot as the Devils goalie of the future it seems as his backup has just been put on waivers this week. Blackwood will carry a 2.79 goals against average and a .904 save percentage into tonight’s game.
What to expect
Although the Devils are at home and won their last two, I just think the Bruins have too much talent for them to keep up. The Bruins lead the league in scoring first, I would expect them to get an early goal and never let the Devils get back into it. After their late game woes lately, I would expect the Bruins to do whatever they must to put this game away efficiently in the third.
