Bruins vs Avalanche NHL on TNT Predictions & Picks (10/16)
Tonight marks the beginning of a three-game road trip for the Bruins, who are looking to capitalize on the Avalanche’s slow start to the 2024-25 NHL season.
The Avalanche have been dreadful to begin the new campaign, going 0-3 SU through their first three outings. Reliable goaltending and defense have been the main source of their woes as they’ve been outscored 20-10 thus far, which equates to a minus-3.3 average scoring margin. It doesn’t help that Colorado’s penalty kill is operating at just 57.1% — second-worst in the NHL.
While the Bruins’s 2-2-0 start to the year is more promising than the Avalanche’s record, things haven’t been perfect. Following Boston’s 4-3 loss to the Florida Panthers on Monday, head coach Jim Montgomery has since revealed that he’s worried about his team’s effort level — especially in their own end, where they’re allowing 3.75 goals per game (10th-worst).
Will the Bruins give a stronger effort tonight?
Another concerning statistic is that the Bruins have already racked up the second-most penalty minutes in the league and average 15.5 PIMs per game. If that trend continues, they could be in trouble against an Avalanche power play that has already converted on 33.3% of opportunities (T-3rd).
Still, it’s hard to ignore how the Bruins have won four of their last five meetings against the Avalanche. That trend might not mean much if starting goaltender Jeremy Swayman can’t turn his play between the pipes around. The 25-year-old netminder has played to a 2.98 goals-against average, and .893 save percentage through three starts, indicating that his preseason contract holdout may have resulted in some rust.
On the other hand, it isn’t as if Avalanche G Alexandar Georgiev has been much better. The Bulgarian puck-stopper has been one of the biggest contributors to Colorado’s slumping, playing to a .790 SV% and 6.58 GAA in his first trio of appearances. It’s also important to highlight how he’s 3-5-1 with a .896 SV% and 3.36 GAA in 11 career matchups against the Bruins.
For comparison, Swayman is 2-0-1 with a .938 SV% and 1.95 GAA in three all-time meetings with the Avs.
Bruins G Jeremy Swayman has been rock-solid against the Avalanche throughout his career. Will that trend continue?
Even though the Avalanche will eventually break out of their slump, I’m taking the Bruins to win tonight. Although they haven’t been perfect, the Bruins have been the better team to begin the season and have proven that they can handle the Avs in the past. Swayman’s success against Colorado should also give Boston the edge as long as Georgiev continues looking like Swiss cheese.
As for tonight’s best bet, I’m taking the Bruins on the moneyline before moving on to the prop pick of the evening.

Best Bruins vs Avalanche NHL Player Prop (10/16)
I’m going with Pavel Zacha o1.5 shots on goal (-136) for the best Bruins vs. Avalanche player prop of the night.
During the 2023-24 NHL season, Zacha tied his career-high of 148 shots on goal across 78 games, averaging 1.9 SOG per outing. The veteran center is now averaging 2.3 SOG through his first four appearances on the 2024-25 schedule, finishing with the Over on this prop three times.
Zacha now gets to face the Avalanche, who allowed the 10th-most SOG to centers last season. Considering how the Over on this prop is also 3-0 in his last three encounters with Colorado, don’t be surprised when Zacha finishes with multiple SOG tonight.
