See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Calgary Flames are off to a roaring 5-0-1 start to their NHL season, but the Carolina Hurricanes come to town looking to extend their winning streak. The Hurricanes are coming off a 3-2 overtime win against the Oilers in Edmonton on Tuesday Night, and they have now won 3 of their last 4 games, 3 of which were on the road. Tonight will be the Canes 4th game of 6 total on this road trip, in which they are 2-1 so far. Can they win tonight in the Saddledome against the Pacific Division leaders?
The Flames just took down Pittsburgh in a shootout, and prior to that lost in Seattle in overtime. Coming off two very tight games, Calgary will look to get back to their form earlier in the season where they outscored teams 19-10 and won four straight. Now, they are getting out shot overall, and they face a Carolina team peppering the net over 32.5 times per game while only allowing their goaltender to take on roughly 26. The Flames will need to come out very offensive minded in order to combat a solid Hurricanes defense.

Flames and Hurricanes Coming off Wins After 60 Minutes
The Flames have been the talk of the town this NHL season. They lead the Pacific Division, have not been beaten in regular time, and are a perfect 3-0 at home, outscoring teams 13-7. But again, they face a very stingy Hurricanes defense that limits their opponent’s chances.
Carolina only blocks 11.6 shots per game, which is 24th in the NHL. The Flames are Top 10 blocking 17 shots of their own, but again, they give up a lot more in the first place. Carolina allows just 25.8 shots per game, which is Top 10 in the league while the Flames allowing over 30 is in the bottom 8 of the NHL. The Calgary goaltender will be tested tonight, but whether that is Dan Vladar or Dustin Wolf is still up in the air. Vladar stops 89% of his shots and allows 2.63 goals per game while Wolf is coming off a 35 save win, stopping 93.6% of shots faced this year and allowing just 2.3 goals per game. Either way, they will earn their paycheck tonight against the Hurricanes who pepper the net.
Canes Dangerous Top Line
The top line for Carolina is very dangerous with Jarvis-Aho-Svechnikov all playing together. They produce 6.1 expected goals in 60 minutes, which is nearly double what the other offensive lines are producing. All three of those skaters pair up with Martin Necas and Shayne Gostisbehere on a very dangerous powerplay unit that ranks 6th in PP%, scoring 28.6% of the time. Both teams are about middle of the pack in penalty minutes, but Carolina is much better at killing the penalty as well. That may come into play tonight on the road.
I see Carolina coming into this matchup focused on slowing down the Flames. They are on the road in enemy territory against a team scoring nearly 4 goals per game. Calgary is 7th in the NHL in goals for, and 6th in shooting percentage. The Hurricanes should certainly try to slow down that offense and limit their dangerous chances. I see them being successful in doing just that.
Carolina Hurricanes vs Calgary Flames Best Bets
Hurricanes vs Flames Prediction: Hurricanes Win 2-1 (+1200)
Best Bets: CAR/CGY Under 6 (+107) BetOnline
For plus money and push potential, I’ll bet the Hurricanes slow down Calgary. Carolina has allowed 30+ shots on goal just one time this season, and it was their last game against Edmonton. The Canes only gave up 30 shots exactly in regulation, and are doing a great job of reeling in opposing offenses and disrupting their rhythm. Despite scoring a ton, the Flames have only put up 30+ shots once this year, and are shooting less than 25 over their last 3 games. This Carolina defense is primed and ready to control the pace of the game and reduce the number of shots faced from their goaltender.
Offensively, I do trust the Flames to be able to handle the Hurricanes and not let this one get out of hand. Personally I don’t think we see 60 combined shots, making it a relatively light night for the goaltenders. Give me the under, especially at plus money with push potential.
