The New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes return to PNC Arena for Game 5 of their second-round playoff series on Thursday, May 11. The Devils vs Hurricanes series has been relatively one-sided so far, leaving time to tell whether the series will come to an end tonight.
After the Devils won Game 3 in convincing fashion, the Hurricanes exacted revenge in Game 4, walking out of Prudential Center with a huge 6-1 victory. After Jack Hughes opened the scoring for New Jersey, Carolina rattled off six unanswered goals, highlighted by Martin Necas scoring twice while Jordan Martinook tallied three points (one goal, two assists).
Can the Hurricanes build off their momentum with another victory tonight? Or do the Devils have what it takes to shake off their latest loss to get back into the win column?
Here’s a look at everything you know heading into Game 5 of the Devils vs Hurricanes series, from the latest betting odds to a prediction with the best betting recommendation.

Devils vs Hurricanes Game 5 Preview
The Hurricanes looked like a completely different team in Game 4 than the one that was absolutely decimated just two days prior.
One of the biggest reasons that the Hurricanes were able to bounce back was Frederik Andersen’s play in the crease. After allowing four goals on just 12 shots Sunday, the Swedish netminder turned aside all but one of the 22 shots he faced Tuesday night.
Andersen is now 4-0 in five appearances in the 2022-23 Stanley Cup Playoffs, playing to a .930 save percentage and 1.80 goals-against average. Any time he plays close to those numbers, Carolina has a solid shot at winning.
The Devils, on the other hand, need better play from their goaltending tandem. Vitek Vanecek was chased after allowing five goals on 17 shots in Game 4 and while Akira Schmid was better in relief, he hasn’t been great in this series. Schmid owns a .833 SV% in nearly 89 minutes played against the Hurricanes while Vanecek is right behind him, sitting with a .824 SV% in almost 150 minutes.
The Hurricanes might be banged up and missing players like Teuvo Teravainen and Andrei Svechnikov, but their impressive depth can help take advantage of the Devils’ goaltending woes. As long as players like Necas, Martinook, and Jesper Fast continue stepping up, Carolina is good enough to beat any team.
On top of goaltending, the Devils can’t afford to play as sloppy as they did in Game 4. Lindy Ruff’s club coughed up the puck 26 times, nearly equating to a giveaway every two minutes. That’s just not going to cut it against a skill-rich team like the Hurricanes, who can make opponents pay for any and all mistakes.
Unfortunately, winning at PNC Arena won’t exactly be easy for New Jersey. On top of being 31-14 straight up at home this season, Carolina has won six of the last seven Devils vs Hurricanes matchups played in Raleigh. On top of that, the ‘Canes outscored the Devils by an average of 2.4 goals over that stretch.
Considering how the Hurricanes outscored the Devils 11-2 on aggregate in Games 1 and 2 at PNC Arena, there’s good reason to doubt the latter heading into tonight’s contests. Despite being one of the best road teams in the NHL this season, New Jersey just can’t get the job done in Raleigh.
Devils vs Hurricanes Game 5 Prediction and Picks
Devils vs Hurricanes Prediction: Hurricanes 5, Devils 3
Golden Knights vs Oilers: Hurricanes ML (Best Value: -130 at BetOnline) & Over 5.5 Goals (Best Value: -130 at BetOnline)
The Devils are a talented team, but their backs are up against the wall and now the Hurricanes have a great opportunity to eliminate them on home ice. Carolina has already dominated New Jersey twice at PNC Arena in this series and after how one-sided Game 4 was, I see the Devils entering the offseason after the final whistle.
In addition to backing a Carolina win, I recommend taking the over on the 5.5-goal total. After all, the Devils vs Hurricanes series has seen 5.5 goals surpassed in each of the four games thus far. It also helps that the over is 8-4 in the Devils’ last 12 road games, as well as 7-2 in the Hurricanes’ previous nine against the Metropolitan Division.
