The Devils have been caught in a rut lately, losing three of their last four games. Their most recent defeat came in the form of a 5-4 shootout loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on New Year’s Day in a game where the Devils only led for one minute and 44 seconds. The Devils and Red Wings have been evenly matched in the two games they’ve played thus far. While Detroit picked up a 5-2 win at the Prudential Center on Oct. 15, New Jersey got its revenge with a 6-2 victory at Little Bovada Arena just 10 days later.

The victory was a rare one for the Devils in the ‘Motor City.’ After all, they’re 4-16 straight up in their last 20 trips to Detroit. Having said that, New Jersey has now won two of its last three road games against the Red Wings, outscoring them 12-9 over that stretch.

The Devils have also been phenomenal on the road this season, boasting a 13-2-1 away record. Jack Hughes has constantly stepped up on the road, recording a team-high 12 goals and 19 points in 16 games. Jesper Bratt isn’t too far behind him, pacing his teammates on the road with 11 goals while also tallying 18 points in 16 away contests.

Meanwhile, the Red Wings have struggled in their own barn as of late. Although Detroit has won back-to-back home games, it’s important to highlight that Derek Lalonde’s team was on a five-game losing streak at Little Bovada Arena before those two victories.

Daily Faceoff projects that Vitek Vanecek will start in goal for the Devils. Although it’s a small sample size, the 26-year-old goaltender has been solid lately, going 1-1-0 in his last three appearances with a 1.76 goals-against average and .931 save percentage (SV%). Assuming he can keep that play up, New Jersey will be fine tonight.

On the other hand, it looks like Ville Husso gets the nod for the Red Wings. Unfortunately, he hasn’t been playing well, going 1-2-2 in his last six games, tallying a 3.87 GAA and .883 SV%. Considering how Husso has already lost four of his last five home games, allowing three or more goals on four occasions, I think that he’ll end up hurting the Red Wings tonight.

At the end of the day, I predict that the Devils will get back on track tonight. They’ve already proven this season that they can easily handle the Red Wings on the road this season and with how well Vanecek has played lately, he certainly gives his team the edge.

Nevertheless, I can’t ignore that Detroit has bested New Jersey more often than not on home ice as of late. As a result, I’m opting to back the Devils on the moneyline rather than the spread.

I also recommend going with the over on the 6.5-goal total. The over is 4-1 in the last five Devils vs Red Wings matchups, seeing at least seven goals scored in each of the last three meetings. Both teams need momentum to get off to a successful start in 2023, so I see more goals than expected being scored as the Devils and Red Wings try to outdo each other.
