Hurricanes vs Rangers NHL Game 2 Predictions & Pick (5/7)

Despite winning Game 1, the Rangers head into tonight’s tilt as underdogs on the puck line and moneyline. Having said that, it’s never a good idea to underestimate New York — especially in games played at Madison Square Garden.

After all, between the regular season and playoffs, the Rangers own an impressive 33-11 SU record at Madison Square Garden in 2023-24. They also won each of their last five home games, outscoring those opponents 18-9 on aggregate. That’s without mentioning how they’re also 4-for-14 (28.6%) on the power play and 19-for-21 (90.5%) on the penalty kill during that stretch.

The Hurricanes are one of the NHL’s better teams away from home and have even won 11 of their last 16 road outings. At the same time, the Canes tend to struggle against the Rangers on the road, dropping six of their last eight trips to MSG.

It’s also worth noting that Carolina is 1-4 SU in its last five games following a series-opening loss.

Do the Hurricanes have what it takes to pull off a rare road win at Madison Square Garden? 

It’ll be interesting to see if the Hurricanes show more urgency tonight. Yes, they almost came back to tie up Game 1, but you can’t wait to show up until the third period against a team like the Rangers. New York knows how to secure a lead and will do so again if Carolina can’t find a way to put pucks past Igor Shesterkin early on.

Speaking of the Rangers’ netminder, Shesterkin didn’t look too special in the series opener, only stopping 22 of the 25 shots he faced for a .880 save percentage. Nevertheless, he’s still 7-2-0 with a 2.35 goals-against average, .924 SV%, and one shutout in his last nine games against Carolina.

The Hurricanes also need Frederik Andersen to step up his play after allowing four goals on 23 shots. While Andersen’s 2023-24 performance has been solid for the most part, his SV% has cratered from .932 in the regular season to .889 in the playoffs.

Will the Hurricanes finally solve Rangers G Igor Shesterkin? 

Even though they’re the betting underdogs, I can’t go against the Rangers. New York was the better team for the majority of Game 1 and has been rock-solid at Madison Square Garden throughout the campaign. Considering how Carolina has struggled to win at MSG over the last few years, I wouldn’t be shocked if Peter Laviolette’s club takes the 2-0 lead.

With that in mind, it’s a no-brainer to back the Rangers on the moneyline. Again, they’ve dominated the Hurricanes in New York lately, so you can’t really go wrong with a +105 upset for the Rangers — especially since it may not happen again this postseason.

Best Hurricanes vs Rangers NHL Game 2 Player Prop (5/7)

As far as Hurricanes vs. Rangers player props go, I’m eyeing the Over on Vincent Trocheck’s 2.5-shot total (+102).

Trocheck has been generating a lot of offense lately, racking up 29 shots in his last 11 games. He’s averaging 2.6 SOG during that stretch while finishing with the Over on this prop seven times — including in both of his last two games. The veteran forward has also finished with three-plus SOG in each of his last three encounters against the Rangers.

Likely feeling confident in himself after scoring in Game 1, I see Trocheck making good on this prop yet again.
