NHL Power Rankings So Far in the 2023/24 Season: Hockey’s Hot or Not List

We’re approximately 15 games into the 2023-24 season and there’s been some big surprises. Both the Eastern Conference and the Western Conference have teams flying and we love to see it.
In the East, the Boston Bruins lead the Conference with 26 points and a record of 12-1-2. Some are surprised by their start as a lot of people were writing the Bruins off going into this year. Right behind them are the New York Rangers and defending Conference Champs the Florida Panthers with 23 points each.
Then in the West, the defending champs lead the way. The Golden Knights are leading the league with 27 points and a 13-3-1 record. Next up is the Vancouver Canucks in 2nd with 25 points and then the Dallas Stars in 3rd with 23 points.
Some of other notable teams to mention are the Arizona Coytes and Detroit Red Wings. Both teams currently sitting in playoff positions (I know, it’s early) in their respective conferences. The Yotes and playoffs in the same sentence is already crazy. The Wings are showing the additions GM Steve Yzerman made are paying off.
On the not so hot side of things, we have the San Jose Sharks leading the pack. This team is terrible with a record of 3-13-1 and only 7 points so far. They are the only team in the league with single digits points.
Another team off to a surprising rough start are the Edmonton Oilers. They’re sitting 2nd to last in the Pacific Division with a record of 5-9-1 and 11 points. This team has struggled defensively allowing 11 more goals than force so far this year. Goaltender Stuart Skinner has started every game this season and has struggled with a .880 save percentage.
I mentioned before that the Rangers have been a bit of surprise, so we’re going to talk about them more. Another team we’re going to talk about is the Canucks and their hot start to the season. Let’s dive further into both teams' success so far and some possible futures to consider.

New York Rangers (2nd Place Eastern Conference) 11-2-1, 23 Points
New York is out here playing their faces off and no one expected it. They are currently out in front of the Metro Division by 5 points and have a +15-goal differential so far this season.
They’re currently 9-0-1 in their last 10 games and are on a 3-game win streak. Regardless of where they’re playing, they’ve been on point, losing only 1 game each at home and on the road.
Artemi Panarin is leading the team offensively. He has 8 goals and 16 assists in his 14 games played so far. The next closest player in points is Chris Kreider with 14 points, so it really shows how involved and important Panarin is to this team.
The Rangers rank in the bottom of the league for shots on goal per game with only 28.4, but rank in the top of the league in shoot percentage with 11.6%. They may not shoot as often as some teams, but when they do, they make sure they’re on net.
Goaltending has been the other bright spot for the Rangers. Former Vezina winner Igor Shesterkin is off to a 6-2 start with a 2.36 GAA and a .913 save percentage. Newly acquired back up Jonathan Quick has been showing out with a 4-0-1 record. He has also been solid between the pipes with a 1.98 GAA and a .928 save percentage.
Playing in one of the toughest divisions in hockey, the Rangers will have their work cut out for them. They have a very promising start to this season, so let’s take a look at some future bets for this team for the rest of this season.

Vancouver Canucks (2nd Place Western Conference) 12-4-1, 25 Points
The shocker of the year. Who has Vancouver on their bingo card as one of the best teams of the year so far? Yeah, neither did I, but here we are.
This team is offense first. They rank 1st in the league with 4.24 goals averaged per game and 1st in the league with a shoot percentage of 14.4%. They, like the Rangers, rank in the lower part of the league for shots on goal, but make their shots count.
Newly named Captain Quinn Hughes has been earning the letter on his sweater. He leads the team with 21 assists and is tied for the lead in points with JT Miller and Elias Pettersson. They all have 27 points, which is pretty crazy.
They are another team backed by good goaltending. Thatcher Demko is off to a hot start with a 8-3-0 record. He has a 2.04 GAA and a .932 save percentage, which is tops in the league. Backup Casey DeSmith has really been solid as well with a 4-1-1 record. He has a 2.89 GAA and a .912 save percentage.
There is a big-time player in their division and that’s the defending Champions. They of course don’t have to win their division to make the playoffs, but if they can stay hot and Vegas cools off, they could slip into first. Let’s take a look at their futures odd.
