The battle in the Metro Division today and it’s a long-time rivalry. The New York Islanders (29-22-15) will take the train into Penn Station to play the New York Rangers (44-19-4). Their last matchup was the Stadium Series game where the Rangers won 6-5 in overtime.
It’s always a good game when the 2 teams face each other. We even got to see a fight last game between Islanders’ Matt Martin and the Rangers Matt Rempe. Rempe will not play in this game as he is out on suspension.
The Islanders have a lot more to play for than the Rangers. Their overtime loss yesterday vs the Senators put them back out of the 2nd Wild Card Spot. Losing in overtime has been their crutch this season, although this game they dramatically tied it just to lose.
Yesterday’s loss was the Islanders 3rd in a row, being shut out the 2 games prior. They’re 6-3-1 in their last 10 games and 14-14-5 on the road. Despite their away record, they are playing at home basically even though there will be more Rangers fans.
Offensively, the Isles have been looking good despite the 2 shutout games. They’re playing a much more skilled game and will need it against this tough Rangers team.
In goal, Ilya Sorokin is expected in net. Guy has had a roller coaster of a season. He has a 22-15-11 record with a 2.99 GAA and a .910 save percentage. He’s 3-2-1 in his last 6 games vs the Rangers.

For the other New York team, the Rangers have been insane this year. They are in 1st place of their division and are 3rd in the Eastern Conference.
At home the Rangers are great with a 23-8-0 record and play in their division with a 14-5-0 record. They come into this game after a win and are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games.
The Rangers offense is middle of the league in most stats, but their defense has been great. They rank in the top 10 of the league for goals and shots on goal allowed per game with great penalty kill rate.
Goalie Igor Shesterkin is having a Vezina type season. He has a record of 28-14-2 with a 2.60 GAA and a .912 save percentage. He has a slow start this season but got hot and has continued to be. Shesterkin has won his last 2 games vs the Isles and is 3-3 in his last 6 games.

As good as both goalies are, they tend to be leaky. Both teams also love playing each other so they come out screaming on offense. These are just 2 reasons that I lean the over and another is the last 3 games have gone over.
For Sorokin, he’s going to get peppered. The Islanders are good to let him allow 2-3 just due to lack of help as a problem they’ve had this season. I could also see Sorokin letting in an easy one or two.
Before Shesterkin’s last 2 wins, the Islanders beat him 4 times, so they have their experience. I don’t know how many, but the Islanders will be good to contribute 1-2 goals to the total.
It’s a low total with good value just like the Bruins game that we just smacked. Expect a good game as both teams are going to be hungry for a win.
Nugget: The line isn’t out yet but take Sorokin over saves. The Rangers are going to light him up!
