After Monday night, the 2023-24 NHL postseason is officially in the books. After nearly suffering one of the biggest collapses in league history, the Florida Panthers are Stanley Cup Champions after overcoming the Edmonton Oilers in a thrilling seven-game series.
While the Panthers are busy planning the parade route, NHL bettors are already looking ahead to the next season. Online sportsbooks like BetOnline already have some NHL futures markets available, including those regarding next year’s champions.
With that in mind, let’s look at the opening 2025 NHL Stanley Cup odds after recapping the latest championship series.
2024 Stanley Cup Final: Oilers vs. Panthers Series Recap
Both of this year’s Stanley Cup Final participants overcame a grueling road to reach the championship round.
After breezing by the Los Angeles Kings in five games, the Oilers engaged in a seven-game war with the rival Vancouver Canucks. Edmonton would win three of the last four games to close out that series before going on to beat the Dallas Stars in six games in the Western Conference Finals, resulting in the former’s first Stanley Cup Final appearance since 2006.
Meanwhile, the Panthers were fairly consistent on the road, only losing back-to-back games once in the first three rounds. They overcame the Tampa Bay Lightning in five games before thwarting the Boston Bruins and New York Rangers in six each. The playoff run also marked Florida’s second consecutive Stanley Cup appearance.
At first, it looked like the Panthers’ experience was paying off. Florida dominated the first part of the series, opening the Stanley Cup Final with three consecutive victories. Considering how they outscored the Oilers 11-4 in those contests, it seemed like the Panthers were heading for a sweep.
But that’s when Edmontons showed signs of life. The Oilers cut the Panthers’ series lead down to two games with an 8-1 blowout victory in Game 4 before notching a 5-3 win in Game 5. With the action back at Rogers Place for Game 6, Connor McDavid & Co. pulled off a 5-1 win to force a sudden-death finish to the championship round.
The Oilers’ comeback effort was all for naught, though, as the Panthers avoided disaster with a 2-1 Cup-clinching effort in Game 7. Sam Reinhart and Carter Verhaeghe each scored while Sergei Bobrovsky turned aside 23 of the 24 shots he faced. Despite his team losing, McDavid was named the Conn Smythe Trophy recipient after amassing 11 points in the Stanley Cup Final.
At the end of the day, it’s clear that last year’s experience helped the Panthers pull off the franchise’s first-ever Stanley Cup victory.

After hoisting hockey’s biggest prize to end the 2023-24 season, the Panthers are BetOnline’s +650 favorite to repeat as Stanley Cup Champions. Since 2000, the 2016/17 Pittsburgh Penguins and 2020/21 Tampa Bay Lightning are the only teams that won consecutive championships. Interestingly enough, the Lightning are also the last team to have made three straight final appearances (2020-22).
After coming up short in Sunrise, the Oilers hold the second-best 2025 Stanley Cup odds (+700). Again, this year marked Edmonton’s first championship-round appearance in nearly 20 years, leaving time to tell if McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and the rest of the squad will keep Oilers fans waiting that long again.
This year’s conference finals runners-up — the Dallas Stars (+900) and New York Rangers (+1100) — own the third- and fourth-best Stanley Cup odds, respectively. Both franchises haven’t won a title since the 1990s and will likely be among the NHL’s top contenders for years to come.
The Carolina Hurricanes, who finished third in the regular season with 111 points, occupy the No. 5 spot at +1200. While the Hurricanes have two Eastern Conference Finals appearances in the last six NHL postseasons, they haven’t reached the Stanley Cup round since they won it all in 2006.
With 14 teams sitting at +2800 or shorter odds, the 2024-25 NHL season is shaping up to be a competitive campaign.
