See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe 2022-23 NHL season continues on Friday, Dec. 30 with a handful of matchups, including a meeting between the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes. This is the second clash of the season between these Eastern Conference foes and after Florida picked up the shutout victory in the first meeting, many are curious to see how the next Panthers vs Hurricanes matchup unfolds.
The Panthers were in action Thursday night, tallying a 7-2 victory against the Montreal Canadiens. Aleksander Barkov was the star of the show, recording a five-point night — including a hat trick in the first period. Now, it remains to be seen if Florida can turn the momentum from this win into something bigger.
Meanwhile, the Hurricanes picked up their ninth straight win with a 3-0 effort against the Chicago Blackhawks earlier this week. Antti Raanta turned away all 24 shots that he faced while three different Chicago players found the back of the net.
As with most notable matchups, there are plenty of betting opportunities in this Panthers vs Hurricanes tilt. Here’s a look at BetOnline Sportsbook’s latest odds for the games, as well as a prediction and the best bet to make, courtesy of Betting News.

Florida vs Carolina Prediction and Picks
Panthers vs Hurricanes Prediction: Hurricanes 4, Panthers 2
Panthers vs Hurricanes: Hurricanes -1.5 (Best Value: +132 at BetOnline) & Under 6.5 Goals (Best Value: -114 at BetOnline)
The Hurricanes have been the hottest team in the NHL throughout their nine-game winning streak. They’ve outscored opponents, 32-17, over that stretch and are showing no signs of slowing down after shutting out the Blackhawks.
Needless to say, it won’t be easy for the Panthers to stop their opponent’s momentum. For starters, Florida has been terrible on the road lately, losing four of their last five games away from FLA Live Arena. What’s even worse is that opposing teams have more than doubled the Panthers’ offense output in that span (23-11).
While the Panthers shut out the Hurricanes earlier this season, the former had the advantage of being on home ice. Now, the Panthers return to PNG Arena, where they’re 4-7-1 in their last 12 trips.
A big reason why the Panthers haven’t done well in Raleigh is that their offense tends to disappear. Florida has been held to two or fewer goals in eight of the last 12 Panthers vs Hurricanes matchups at PNG Arena, leaving time to tell if that trend continues tonight.
It’s also going to be tough for the Panthers to succeed after the Hurricanes have won seven straight home games. Carolina has had no issues producing offense, tallying 27 goals with six of them coming from a power-play unit that’s clicking at 26.1% over that span.
Considering how the Panthers have taken at least four penalties in four of their last five road games, the Hurricanes could experience more success on the man advantage.
Another thing that gives the Hurricanes the edge is goaltender Pyotr Kochetkov, who hasn’t lost in regulation since Nov. 23. Kochetkov is now 8-0-2 in his last 10 starts, recording a 1.80 goals-against average, .937 save percentage and two shutouts.
The Hurricanes should have the goaltending advantage, regardless of who starts for the Panthers. Sergei Bobrovsky would be playing on less than 24 hours of rest if he starts while backup Spencer Knight has lost his last two starts, allowing a combined 10 goals on 41 shots in those games.
At the end of the day, I predict that the Hurricanes will keep the ball rolling tonight with their 10th straight win. They’re too good at home to lose to a team that’s been struggling on the road like the Panthers. With Florida having also played less than 24 hours ago, I see a well-rested Carolina team covering the 1.5-goal spread.
I also see the two sides combining for fewer than 6.5 goals. After all, it’s a mark that they’ve fallen below in six of their last 10 meetings and with the Panthers being a bit more tired than usual, I’m erring on the side of caution.
