2023 Stanley Cup Finals Preview
Florida Panthers: Eastern Conference Champions
The Florida Panthers may be the biggest surprise of any professional postseason.
The 8th seeded Panthers only made the playoffs over the Pittsburgh Penguins because of a Chicago Blackhawks victory on April 13th. The Panthers went on to upset the top seed and President’s Trophy winners, the Boston Bruins. After taking the Bruins down in 7, the Panthers made light work of the Toronto Maple Leafs, winning that series in five games.
In the Eastern Conference Finals, the Panthers swept the Carolina Hurricanes in four games, winning in dramatic fashion. They’ve had their ticket punched for a few extra days and are eager to get this series started.
After winning the President’s Trophy last year, the Panthers were knocked out in the 1st round of the playoffs. Florida will be very hungry to prove they deserve to be in this spot.
Vegas Golden Knights: Western Conference Champions
The Vegas Golden Knights are the top seed in the West, and although they lost their opening playoff game at home, they have turned it around since.
Vegas lost Game 1 of the 1st round against the Winnipeg Jets, however the Knights would go on to win the next four games, completing the gentleman’s sweep.
Next up was the Edmonton Oilers whom the Knights took down in six games. After finding themselves tied 1-1 after two games, the Golden Knights switched goalies, putting Adin Hill between the posts. Hill has started every game since, and has a 7-3 record this playoff campaign.
In the Western Conference Finals, the Knights jumped out to 3-0 series lead, following two overtime victories at home and a 4-0 shutout win in Dallas. It looked as though Vegas would complete the sweep the next night.
Alas, Dallas battled back, winning in overtime, and even forced a Game 6 by stealing Game 5 in Vegas. The Golden Knights were tired of playing around, and ended the Stars season by a score of 6-0.
Regular Season Series
These two teams only played twice during the regular season, with each team successfully defending their home ice.
We saw a higher scoring game in Vegas, where the Knights won 4-2 thanks to three consecutive goals in the 3rd period. In Florida, the Panthers secured a 2-1 victory, only conceding one PowerPlay goal.
While the Panthers have had slightly more time to rest before Game 1, they have only played one less game than the Knights. Therefore, I don’t think fatigue really comes into play in this series.
Ultimately, I believe this series lies on the shoulders of Sergei Bobrovsky. He has been playing out of his mind this playoffs, and if he can continue to do that, the Panthers will just need to find high danger chances and take advantage.
The Knights will look to do what no team has been able to do so far, and that’s make Bobrovsky look like a normal goalie. Bobrovsky allowed just 6 goals in four games against the offensive powered Hurricanes. If can keep it up, the Knights will struggle, as I’m sure they will allow plenty of offense.

I’ll admit I’m rooting for this bet as much I think it will hit.
The NHL is obviously rooting for an exciting series, and everybody is hoping for more hockey.
While I do think Bobrovsky’s play regresses slightly, I do think Florida has the offense to put up a fight if he can’t keep up the spectacular saves. Signing Matthew Tkachuk has been huge this playoffs, and Florida will look for him to shine this series.
On the other side, Jonathan Marchessault and Jack Eichel will have a tough goalie to beat every single game. Although they arguably already did that facing Hellebuyck, Skinner, and Oettinger this playoffs. Bobrovsky will be the ultimate, final test.
