See Picks & Statistics For The GameThe Carolina Hurricanes and New York Rangers took part in an instant classic on Wednesday night. The Rangers had a 1-0 lead before Sebastian Aho found the back of the net for Carolina with 2:23 left on the clock. Carolina would go on to win in overtime and take a 1-0 series lead.
The Rangers defense was nearly perfect on Wednesday, but the team still came away down in the series. Game 2 will take place on Friday night.
The Hurricanes found late game success as they continued to push toward the net in the third period. Eventually, the rush was just too much for New York to handle, and the 10th shot of the period wound up in the net.
Rangers goaltender Igor Shesterkin, was fabulous in Game 1. He made 24 saves on 26 shots and held Carolina scoreless for nearly 60 minutes. Unfortunately, a defensive mishap, and a rebound off of his left pad, lead to Carolina breaking through and grabbing the momentum late.
It took the Hurricanes nearly all of Game 1 to find their groove, but they have it now heading into Game 2. They escaped the first game unscathed, and they will be building off of their success to try and take a commanding 2-0 series lead.

Carolina’s Late Game Heroics
Carolina still has not lost at home in the playoffs. Ian Cole made sure of that in Game 1 with an overtime winner 3:12 into the extra frame.
The Hurricanes would not be in the position they are now without a late game push on Wednesday night. The Rangers were content to try and run out the clock, but Carolina had other plans.
It seemed like the Hurricanes were never going to break through, but the speed and precision of Sebastian Aho gave them a chance for the victory. The Rangers controlled the first 40 minutes of the game. The third period was a different story.
Carolina was desperate for a goal, and they changed their offensive game plan to keep pushing toward the offensive zone. They only allowed the Rangers to get 4 shots on net in the third, and they outmatched them in physical play.
In Carolina’s last 9 games, the home team has been victorious each time. They will be hoping for that trend to continue on Friday as they host Game 2. Their offense is finding their groove, and the ability to strike quickly was evident in their last game.
Heading into Game 2, the Hurricanes are the favorite. The ability to never give up and keep pushing for that all-important goal is a big reason why. Expect Carolina to be more explosive on offense and find their rhythm early.
Rangers vs. Hurricanes Prediction and Best Bets
Rangers vs. Hurricanes Prediction: Hurricanes 4, Rangers 2
Rangers vs. Hurricanes Best Bets: Hurricanes -1.5 (+150 at BetOnline and Bovada Sportsbook)
The Rangers only managed 1 goal against a strong Carolina defense. With the offense for the Hurricanes expected to be more explosive, I see them running away with the game early.
The spread for the Hurricanes provides the best value, as I could see them covering and them some. Bet Carolina at home in Game 2, as they look for a 6th straight home win in the postseason.
