Some teams had memorable seasons, posting high point totals that exceeded their pre-season projections. Others had seasons they wish they could forget, and are happy to see the offseason as they try to adjust to what happened over the past 6 months.

Overachievers for the 2021-22 NHL Season

Florida Panthers: Over/Under 101.5 vs. Final Total of 122

The Florida Panthers have won the Presidents’ Trophy and have the best regular season record this season. They have turned into an offensive powerhouse that ranks 1st in goals scored and shots on goal per game.

Florida recorded the most points in franchise history and the third most since the Presidents’ trophy was introduced in 1986. The Panthers were expected to be good this season, but in a stacked Atlantic Division, they went above and beyond.

The club set a record with 340 goals during the regular season. Their offense is almost unstoppable, and the distribution of goals and assists plays a big part in that. The Panthers have 4 solid lines that can attack and score at a moment’s notice.

The Panthers are set to play the Washington Capitals in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. With the best offense in the league, and a solid goaltender in Sergei Bobrovsky, the Panthers will be fun to watch in the postseason as they try to win their first playoff series in 26 years.

Calgary Flames: Over/Under 92.5 vs. Final Total of 111

The Calgary Flames have exceeded expectations this year. They picked up the Pacific Division title and hold the third best record in the Western Conference.

Many thought that the Vegas Golden Knights would run away with the division, but Calgary had other plans. The Flames are Top 5 in defense and have an offense that is putting up over 3.5 goals per game.

The Flames have a trio of players that have scored 40+ goals this year and are leading the team in points. Johnny Gaudreau, Matthew Tkachuk, and Elias Lindholm have created a lethal offensive attack that is scoring on exactly 10% of shots taken.

Calgary is a fun team to watch, and they will be a force in the playoffs. They have a rematch with the Dallas Stars from Round 1 in 2020. The team will look to advance (without a qualifying round) for the first time since 2015.

Minnesota Wild: Over/Under 96.5 vs. Final Total of 113

The Minnesota Wild finished second in the Central Division and have the second best record in the Western Conference. They have closed out the season, winning 8 of their last 10 games.

Momentum is on the Wild’s side. They have the second highest shooting percentage in the league and they are Top 5 in goals scored. Their offense has carried them to an impressive record, but that’s not all Minnesota has done this season.

The Wild acquired goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks. He is 9-2-0 in his starts with the Wild and has a goals against average of 2.74.

Needless to say, the acquisition of Fleury has propelled the Wild into a position where they can contend for a championship. The 3 time Stanley Cup champion will give the Wild an edge going into their Round 1 matchup with the St. Louis Blues.

Underachievers for the 2021-22 NHL Season

Montreal Canadiens: Over/Under 89.5 vs. Final Total of 55

The Montreal Canadiens have followed up their 2021 Stanley Cup Final appearance with one of the most disappointing seasons in franchise history.

The team only mustered 22 wins on the season and rank in the Bottom 5 in defense. The team has allowed the most goals per game by any team in the league.

Montreal expected to follow up their Stanley Cup Final run with a full season of consistent, fast-paced hockey. Instead, they have come up with the worst record in the league and have struggled to score all season long.

The Canadiens need a major push in the offseason. They have become a team that nobody fears and a team that others can walk right over. I expect a major overhaul to the team come the 2022-23 season.

Philadelphia Flyers: Over/Under 92.5 vs. Final Total of 61

The Philadelphia Flyers entered the 2021-22 season with high hopes and a positive attitude. However, the season has been unkind to the team, and they walk away with a last place finish in the Metropolitan Division.

The Flyers lost 8 of their last 10 games and finish the season close to dead last in total defense. The team also finishes second to last in total goals scored.

Philadelphia had hopes of a playoff berth this season. Instead, they have come up with the second worst record in the Eastern Conference.

It’s back to the drawing board for the Flyers, as they try to adjust and prepare for the 2022-23 season.

Seattle Kraken: Over/Under 94.5 vs. Final Total of 60

The newest team in the NHL was underwhelming to say the least. The Kraken only won 27 games during the regular season and had one of the worst offenses in the entire league.

Compared to the most recent expansion team, the Vegas Golden Knights, the Kraken underperformed and disappointed a lot of fans in the northwest.

Seattle will look to adjust and rebound during the 2022-23 season. They have a decent defense, but they will have to limit penalties and improve their penalty kill if they want a chance at the playoffs next season.

Final Thoughts

The 2021-22 NHL season has provided a multitude of teams that are capable of making a deep run in the Stanley Cup Playoffs.

With the regular season in the books, we shift to the playoffs and the Round 1 matchups that have been locked in. Lots of division rivalries will take place in the opening round and it is guaranteed to provide plenty of entertainment for the next week.
