The National Hockey League has a massive 12-game schedule planned for Tuesday, Feb. 27, including a Western Conference tilt between the Dallas Stars (35-16-9) and Colorado Avalanche (35-19-5) at 9:30 p.m. ET on ESPN+.

The Stars were just in action last night, falling 3-2 in overtime to the New York Islanders to mark their fifth loss in the last six games. Meanwhile, the Avalanche look to avoid a third straight loss after picking up a 4-3 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs over the weekend.
These clubs are two of the best teams in the NHL and their Stanley Cup odds on BetOnline reflect that fact. Heading into Tuesday’s matchup, Dallas and Colorado are tied for the third-best odds (+900) to hoist the Lord Stanley’s Cup in June.
In the meantime, let’s check out my Stars vs. Avalanche predictions and best bets as we dive into this betting preview.

Stars vs Avalanche Prediction & Pick (2/27): Colorado Finds More Home Success
Tonight’s matchup could be an important one when it comes to determining this year’s Pacific Division winner. The Stars currently lead the division with 79 points through 60 games while the Avalanche aren’t that far behind them, amassing 75 points across 59 contests. A win by the home team would close the gap to just two points.
If the Avs want to catch the Stars, a full 60-minute effort is needed. Colorado has dropped seven of its last 10 contests and part of those struggles have to do with special teams issues, highlighted by 10.0% power play and 73.3% penalty kill percentages during that stretch. The Avalanche’s latest two losses both came by just one goal, though, meaning they are keeping things close.
On the other hand, the Stars are 1-5 SU in their last six outings, so things aren’t going swimmingly for them either. While two losses during the skid came by multiple goals, the other three took place in overtime or a shootout, including last night’s defeat.
A quick turnaround could be detrimental for Dallas, though. When it comes to back-to-back outings this season, the Stars are only 3-4 SU when playing on zero days of rest.
The Stars only have three wins in seven games when playing without a day of rest this season.
The Stars have also yet to have any luck against the Avalanche so far in 2023-24. The Pacific Division rivals have already collided twice at American Airlines Center this season. The Avalanche first scored six unanswered goals to pick up a 6-3 win over the Stars on Nov. 18 before squeaking out with a 5-4 OT victory during a rematch on Jan. 4.
Not only has Colorado now won five of its last six meetings with Dallas, but it’s also on a three-game winning streak against its rival, outscoring Peter DeBoer’s team 16-9 on aggregate.
And even though the Avalanche have had their fair share of struggles lately, most of those took place on the road. Colorado has been electric at home lately, boasting a 13-2 SU record across its last 15 home games. Even though they came up short against the Maple Leafs a few nights ago, the Avs haven’t lost back-to-back home games since the start of December.
The Stars, meanwhile, have dropped three of their last four road outings and haven’t even won in Denver since Feb. 2022.
Will the Avalanche continue to rack up wins at Ball Arena?
While both teams could use a victory tonight, I’m taking the Avalanche to stand tall at home. Even though things haven’t been perfect lately, the Avalanche emerge victorious more often than not at Ball Arena and that fact combined with the Stars struggling to defeat their divisional rivals is a good reason to back the home team tonight.
As for the best bet, we’ll keep things simple by going with Colorado on the moneyline. The Avalanche have proven that they have the Stars’ number and while the puck line could be tempting, I’m sticking with the moneyline after their last meeting was only decided by one goal.

Best Stars vs Avalanche NHL Player Prop (2/27)
Some players tend to step up against certain clubs and that’s the case for Mikko Rantanen when it comes to facing Dallas. That’s why I’m backing the Over on his 3.5-shot total as the best Stars vs. Avalanche player prop.
[su_icon icon="icon: check-circle" background="#F4F7FC" color="#2FBB9C" text_color="#1F2933" size="16" shape_size="4" radius="256" text_size="14" url="" margin="0"] $10 Cash Bonus with code "BNEWS" [/su_icon]

Rantanen has consistently hit the Over on this prop when taking on the Stars, going 7-5 across the last 12 encounters — including in each of the last three — meetings while averaging 4.1 SOG. Additionally, the Over is 8-1 in his last nine home games against Dallas.
With the Stars also surrendering the fifth most SOG to right wings this season, I’d be surprised if Rantanen doesn’t make good on this prop again.
Best Stars vs Avalanche Prop Bet: Mikko Rantanen o3.5 SOG (+100)
