Newcastle United host Liverpool at St James’ Park to bring the curtain up on what will be a hectic Saturday in the English Premier League.
Six games make up the schedule, but it’s the opener we are most excited about as the Magpies play the Reds with followers hoping for another goal-fest from a fixture that has become notorious for high-scoring affairs.
Newcastle are the home team for this match and will be roared on by a capacity crowd. Their fanbase is known for their loyalty and noise. This is a fixture that brings the best out of them, and the players seem to respond, lifting their performance levels.

The home team can’t win the Premier League this season, but they can have a say in which team does. Those in the home stands would love nothing more than to dent the title ambitions of their opponents.
Liverpool looked dead and buried at Christmas, with a top-four finish and spot in next season’s Champions League the best they could hope for. Jurgen Klopp’s men have turned things around in 2022, going on a long unbeaten run consisting mostly of wins.
This has propelled them back into the title picture, and Liverpool are now hot on the heels of leaders and last season’s champions Man City. Another three points here will help keep their hopes of winning the league on track.
Dreaming of another goal-fest
This fixture is notorious for providing followers with plenty of goals, and we’re hoping for more of the same here.
This isn’t a derby match, as such, but there is always plenty of needle between the two, and the history of this fixture shows both Newcastle and Liverpool try just a little harder to win the three points than normal.
The coaches and players want the win but are also aware of the desire of fans to hold the bragging rights over their opponents. They want to be heading to work on Monday morning, ready to ramp up the pain on fans of the opposition.
Newcastle’s St James’ Park will be packed to the rafters with fans hoping to see their beloved side record a famous win over the Reds. The fact they haven’t seen Newcastle beat Liverpool since 2015 only increases that hunger.
Wins over the opposition at this venue don’t come around too often, but when they do, the supporters make sure they enjoy them. That last win came courtesy of a 2-0 that was achieved thanks to an own goal from Skrtel and a late winner from Wijnaldum that was scored with 90 minutes on the clock. Interestingly, both goals were scored in the last 21 minutes of play.
Many soccer lovers like to keep the recent stats, trends and form in mind when making predictions on Premier League matches, and there’s plenty to work with here.
The head-to-head figures make for interesting reading, with both teams scoring at least one goal each in the last two renewals of this fixture and in five of the last six.
Another competitive encounter looks likely, and the same stats show us that two of the last three meetings have ended in a draw, as well as four of the last 10.
A share of the spoils wouldn’t be a bad result for the home team here, but it would go down as two points dropped for Liverpool, who know they need everything they can get to keep the pressure on Man City.
A win in this game would move Liverpool to the top of the league, boosting their points tally to 82, while Man City will remain on 80. That will be the case at least until the current EPL pacesetters face Leeds United at Elland Road later in the day.
That’s a match the Cityzens are expected to win and score a few goals in the process, but Leeds are always dangerous, and points aren’t won cheaply at Elland Road this season.
Regardless of how Man City fare against Leeds, followers of Liverpool will want to see their side do the basics and win, putting the pressure on their rivals for the title.
Reds won 3-1 last time
Returning to the stats associated with this fixture, we reveal that Liverpool beat Newcastle 3-1 at Anfield a few days before Christmas, but it was the Magpies that raced into an early lead that day.
Shelvey had the ball in the net inside seven minutes, but his teammates were unable to protect that advantage. Jota equalised with 21 minutes on the clock before Salah gave Liverpool the lead, and Alex-Arnold scored near the end to wrap up the points.
As already mentioned, both teams have scored in five of the last six renewals of this fixture, with the odd game in that run being a goalless draw when last playing at this venue. That was followed by a 1-1 at Anfield last season before Liverpool smashed the run of draws with that battling 3-1 victory.
On that note, a 3-1 win for Liverpool has been the score in three of their last five meetings with the Magpies, and that’s worth keeping in mind when making your predictions on this renewal.
The Reds scored exactly three goals in meetings with Benfica – home and away – and Man City last month. Newcastle have also found the net at least once in their last five outings. Could we see another 3-1 win for the away team? It’s certainly possible.
We won’t be as ambitious as trying to predict another 3-1 win for Liverpool at St James’ Park, but we will keep the stats in mind when making our call.
Both teams to score is often a great bet when Newcastle and Liverpool face-off, and we are hot on the chances of the away win. The locals have been impressive of late, winning their last four to climb to ninth, but this means more to the away team.
The league title is on the line, and a chance to move to the top of the league should be enough to see them through.
