The 2023 Women’s World Cup has finally reach the knockout round! Group Stage is over and 16 teams advanced by winning or placing 2nd in their group.
This page will go over the Round of 16 matchups, and how the group stage went down.
There were some big surprises regarding teams who made it out and teams who are packing their bags early (cough, cough, Brazil).
We will discuss the current Women’s World Cup future odds, and my pick to win the whole thing after the groups (hint, it’s not the USWNT).

Women’s World Cup Future Betting Odds
Odds courtesy of Bovada.
- England (+350)
- Spain (+450)
- USA (+450)
- France (+700)
- Japan (+800)
- Netherlands (+1100)
- Australia (+1500)
- Sweden (+1800)
The Top 8 betting favorites do not represent the eight group winners. In face both Spain and the United States finished 2nd in their group.
Two group winners not in the Top 8 are Switzerland and Colombia. The Swiss advanced after a win and two draws in the group stage with rather weak competition.
Here are the other 8 teams.
- Colombia (+2800)
- Norway (+6500)
- Denmark (+8000)
- Jamaica (+10000)
- Nigeria (+10000)
- Switzerland (+15000)
- South Africa (+25000)
- Morocco (+25000)
Unfortunately, I do not see any of these 8 teams taking the title.

Group Stage Surprises
Group A was mostly chalk with the two highest ranking teams advancing. Both teams have their work cutout for them in the Round of 16.
Group B was won by host Australia, but Canada was supposed to be the runner-up. The Canadians drew with Nigeria to start the tournament, but Nigeria went on to upset Australia.
Nigeria tied with Ireland while Canada got trounced by Australia, and was able to advance as the runner up. They were the lowest FIFA ranked team in their group at 40th overall.
Group C was always going to be a dog fight between Spain and Japan, but Japan ended up on top. Both teams had 6 points going into the final match, where the Japanese were able to shutout the Spaniards, 4-0.
England ran away with Group D, and Denmark was the runner-up. The Danes rank 13th and are followed by 14th ranked China whom they were able to beat and advance.
Group E was the United States to lose and they sure did. After a comeback draw against the Netherlands, the USWNT drew with Portugal nil-nil to secure a point and advance.
The Netherlands looked strong, allowing just one goal in group stage and dominating the US. In my opinion, the Dutch have the “easiest” route to the Semifinals.
France won Group F as expected, but Jamaica advanced after drawing with Brazil in the final match of group stage. Brazil was ranked 8th and could not beat the 43rd ranked Jamaicans to advance in Marta’s last World Cup.
Sweden ran away with Group G in total domination. They looked poised to give a run at their first ever World Cup Title. The Swedes have finished in 3rd three times including 2019, and were the Runner-Ups in 2003.
Group H had the biggest surprise as 25th ranked Colombia topped the group on goal differential. They did not tie with 3rd ranked Germany, and instead 72nd ranked Morocco earned six points and advanced to face France.

Round of 16 Best Bets
Looking at the bracket right now, The Netherlands and most likely England have the easiest roads to the Semifinals.
The 9th ranked Dutch face South Africa who is 54th and just got their first World Cup win ever over Italy. They would then face either 20th ranked Switzerland who hasn’t been tested, or 6th ranked Spain, who lost their group and have not looked good in any of their three games.
England faces Nigeria who escaped their group over Canada. Assuming 25th ranked Colombia earn one point against Morocco, they would face Jamaica and then England in the Semifinals.
Here are the four teams I would be on to win the 2023 Women’s World Cup as of now.
- England (+350)
- Japan (+800)
- The Netherlands (+1100)
- Sweden (+1800)
Now unfortunately three of these teams are on the same side of the bracket, and Sweden faces the USWNT in the Round of 16. Regardless, I think England controls their side, and all three of the other squads have looked very sound in the Group Stage.
Hopefully we can come back to this when The Netherlands plays Sweden in the Semifinals for a chance to face England in the 2023 Women’s World Cup Final.
Clip it.
(As a guy with plenty of Dutch in my blood, I’ll be rooting for the Orange to win the whole thing after finishing 2nd in 2019)
