As was the case last year, the 2022 French Open women’s singles draw has seen upset after upset after upset over the past week and a half.
Of the top 16 seeds in the draw, only one has reached the semifinals, which will take place on Thursday.
That one seed happens to be the number one seed and the world number one, Iga Swiatek. Entering the tournament, Swiatek was a strong favorite to take the title in Paris. And with her top expected challengers all eliminated, the gap between the 2020 French Open women’s singles champion and the other remaining contenders has only widened.
Swiatek Survives String of Upsets to Remain on Course for Second French Open Title
In 2020, Swiatek was on the giving end of the upsets, as she won the title as an unseeded player in a run that included a fourth-round defeat of #1 seed Simona Halep and a win over #4 seed Sofia Kenin in the final.
Last year, she was on the receiving end, falling in the quarters to Maria Sakkari. This year, she appears primed to take back her crown. Thus far, she has lost only one set in extending her incredible win streak to 33 matches ahead of her semifinal showdown with #20 seed Daria Kasatkina.
In the other semifinal, American phenom Coco Gauff, the #18 seed, will meet unseeded Martina Trevisan.
Along with being the clear favorite, Swiatek is also the only member of the quartet who has reached a Grand Slam singles semifinal. Gauff reached the women’s doubles final at last year’s US Open, where she and Caty McNally fell to Sam Stosur and Zhang Shuai.
All four players were not strangers to the French Open quarters–Swiatek and Trevisan met in the quarters in 2020, while Gauff has made the last eight in back-to-back years, and Kasatkina reached the quarters at Roland Garros in 2018–but this is uncharted territory for all but the player who already had a hatful of advantages over her competition already.
But the matches are not played on paper, and after all of the upsets that have occurred thus far, the favorite will need to bring her best to first see off Kasatkina tomorrow and then take care of business against either Gauff or Trevisan in Saturday’s final.
Here’s a look at tomorrow’s schedule and the odds for each match.

2022 French Open Women’s Semifinal Predictions and Picks
Swiatek vs. Kasatkina
Swiatek has looked unbeatable for much of her current win streak, but she did have a moment of vulnerability in her fourth-round win over Qinwen Zheng.
But after needing to rally from losing the first set against Zheng, she hardly let Jessica Pegula get a sniff in their quarterfinal matchup on Wednesday.
After breaking Swiatek in the opening game of the match, she did get broken back immediately. But it was mostly smooth sailing from there.
Pegula was broken three times in five service games in the first set and twice in four service games in the second set, and Swiatek secured a 6-3, 6-2 win in only 91 minutes.
After needing two hours, 40 minutes to dispatch Zheng in the previous round, that was a rather easy, breezy win for Swiatek. And it was more in line with her first three wins, which all took 91 minutes or less.
Kasatkina has actually done something that Swiatek has not done at this year’s French Open, which is win all of her matches without losing a set. It has been a very impressive run for the 25-year-old Russian and could serve as a springboard for much more success.
But it will take a bigger effort than in any of her previous wins to have a chance to pull the major upset. Swiatek showed that she is mortal after all against Zheng, but that appears to have been a welcome wakeup call for the world number one.
Swiatek vs. Kasatkina Prediction – Swiatek to win in straight sets
Swiatek vs. Kasatkina Betting Tip – There is no real betting value if you are backing Swiatek unless you go for set or game correct score markets or back the -6.5 games, none of which we are recommending or backing here.
Trevisan vs. Gauff
Gauff appears ready for her big breakthrough, having reached the semifinals without dropping a set. But she will face a challenge from Trevisan, the smiling assassin who dispatched 2021 US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez in three sets in the quarters.
Trevisan hadn’t made a lot of noise on the WTA Tour prior to the French Open until winning a pre-tournament warmup event in Rabat, Morocco. That tournament win saw her upset #1 seed Garbine Muguruza in her second match on the way to the final, where she defeated American Cara Liu.
Winning titles, in any team or individual sport, can often end up being about getting hot at the right time, and that timely title in Morocco seems to have worked wonders for Trevisan.
Gauff is a worthy favorite in this match, and she should handle the 28-year-old Italian to advance to her first Grand Slam singles final. But Trevisan is not going to go quietly and look for her to at least take a set off of the 18-year-old American.
Trevisan vs. Gauff Prediction – Gauff to win in three sets
Trevisan vs. Gauff Betting Tip – Both players to win a set (+142 at BetOnline)
