Last Sunday, Bernarda Pera won her first WTA Tour singles title. Six days later, she could have two in the span of a week, provided she can defeat top seed Anett Kontaveit today in the final of the WTA Hamburg European Open.
Pera needed to go through two qualifying matches to reach the main draw at the Budapest Grand Prix in Hungary, and after winning those two matches, she won five more, including the final against Aleksandra Krunic, to pick her first title on the main tour.
To make it two in two, the world’s 81st-ranked player will have defeated world number two Kontaveit, who is seeking her second title this season.

Kontaveit vs. Pera Prediction and Picks
Pera Looking for a Dandy Dozen
Between her run in Budapest and her run in Hamburg, Pera has now won 11 matches in a row.
Her run is made all the more impressive by the fact that the 27-year-old Croatian-born American had won only five of 14 main tour matches this year prior to Budapest.
And it’s made even more impressive by the fact that she has yet to drop a set in this sizzling streak. In Budapest, she had a couple of 7-5 sets, but that is the closest she has come to losing a set over the last couple of weeks.
Kontaveit, however, will represent her biggest challenge over these two weeks. In Budapest, Pera’s toughest opponents were the #5 and #9 seeds, while #7 seed Maryna Zanevska, her semifinal opponent yesterday, is her best conquest so far in Hamburg.
Kontaveit Seeking First Title Since February
This week has been equally as big for Kontaveit as it has been for Pera. Despite moving up to #2 in the WTA rankings in June, the 26-year-old from Estonia has not played or won much since winning her only title of the season in St. Petersburg, Russia in February then reaching the final in Doha, Qatar in her next tournament that same month.
In fact, with four wins so far in Hamburg, she has as many wins as she had in his previous six tournaments.
As it happens, her most recent win before Hamburg came against Pera in the first round at Wimbledon a few weeks ago.
In that match, Pera broke Kontaveit at 4-4 in the first set and was up 30-15 while serving for the set in the next game. But it fell apart from there, as she was broken in that game and in her next three service games as Kontaveit went on to a 7-5, 6-1 win.
Kontaveit vs. Pera Prediction & Picks
Kontaveit hasn’t had a ton of stress in her week in Hamburg, but that likely won’t remain the case in today’s final.
When you’re hot, you’re hot, and Pera can certainly push Kontaveit, especially on a surface she is doing very well on at the moment.
If she falls behind or if Pera pushes the match to three sets, it will be interesting to see how Kontaveit responds. This is just her ninth match in three months, and none so far have gone the distance, so 2+ hours on court will be a test of her fitness.
It is good to see Kontaveit back in form after a tough stretch on and off of the court, with COVID playing a big role in derailing her form and her season. But I like the run that Pera is on, and I feel confident in backing her to make it two titles in two weekends.
Kontaveit vs. Pera Betting Pick: Pera +2.5 games (-102 at BetOnline) & Pera to win (+148 at BetUS)
