On the way to Iga Swiatek finishing a dominant season by winning the title at the 2022 WTA Finals, Aryna Sabalenka decided to throw in a major twist in yesterday’s semifinals.
In the first semifinal, #6 seed Caroline Garcia, who finished second behind Swiatek in their group, booked a spot in tonight’s final in Fort Worth with a 6-3, 6-2 win over #5 seed Maria Sakkari, who finished atop the other group and was favored to advance.
In the other semifinal, #1 seed Swiatek, who was in search of her ninth title and tenth final this season, was heavily favored to dispatch #7 seed Sabalenka.
Instead, Sabalenka pulled the upset, downing Swiatek 6-2, 2-6, 6-1 to set up a championship showdown with Garcia at Dickies Arena.
Tonight’s match is set for 9:00 p.m. Eastern/8:00 p.m. local time, and in the United States, viewers can catch the action on the Tennis Channel.

Garcia is looking to finish off a career-best year with her fourth title.
Her first title of the season came on grass, at the Bad Homburg Open in Germany in June. She followed that with a clay title, winning the Poland Open in June.
In August, she claimed a WTA 1000 hard-court title at the Cincinnati Open, knocking off Petra Kvitova in straight sets for her third career WTA 1000 singles title. On the way to that crown, she eliminated Sabalenka in three sets in the semis.
Garcia and doubles partner Kristina Mladenovic also won their second French Open doubles crown this year, and she also made the US Open semifinals–her first-ever Grand Slam singles semifinal–where she lost to eventual runner-up Ons Jabeur.
This will be Sabalenka’s third appearance in a final this season, and she is looking for her first title since winning the Madrid Open (a WTA 1000 event) in May of last year.
This year, she lost to Swiatek in straight sets in the final of the Stuttgart Open in Germany in April (on clay) and to Ekaterina Alexandrova in the final of the Rosmalen Open in the Netherlands in June (on grass).
Sabalenka’s breakthrough against Swiatek was huge, given that she had lost to her in the semifinals of both the Italian Open (a WTA 1000 event) and US Open this year, in addition to her loss in the Stuttgart final and her loss to Garcia in the Cincinnati semis.
Aryna Sabalenka vs Caroline Garcia Prediction
Caroline Garcia to win in three sets: Beating Swiatek is huge for Sabalenka given that she had gone 0-4 against the world number one this year with just one set won across those four matches. But I expect Garcia to finish off a tremendous year with the title in Fort Worth.
