With Rafael Nadal set to make his return to the ATP Tour at next week’s Masters 1000 event in Madrid, there is a lot to look forward to on the men’s singles circuit next week.
There is plenty of ATP action to take in this week though, with ATP 250 events taking place in Portugal and Germany. In Cascais, Portugal, the Estoril Open is taking place, while the BMW Open is taking place in Munich, Germany.
While the top seed (Felix Auger-Aliassime) is still alive at the Estoril Open, the top seed in Munich has already been sent packing. On Wednesday, Holger Rune upset #1 seed Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-2.
Rune’s win on Wednesday set up a quarterfinal showdown with Emil Ruusuvuori, another unseeded player. As it happens, today is Rune’s 19th birthday, and what a present it would be for him to advance to his first ATP main tour semifinal.
The other quarterfinal matchup in the top half of the draw also features two unseeded players in Oscar Otte, the lone remaining German in the draw, and Alejandro Tabilo.
The two matches in the bottom half of the draw feature all seeded players, as #2 seed Casper Ruud will meet #8 seed Botic van de Zandschulp and #4 seed–and defending champion–Nikoloz Basilashvili will take on #7 seed Miomir Kecmanovic.
Let’s take a look at the full schedule for Friday in Munich, along with the odds for each match and for the tournament.

Top BMW Open Betting Picks for Today
Best Pick
- Botic van de Zandschulp to win a set vs. Casper Ruud (-110 at BetOnline)
Ruud entered this clay swing after reaching the final of the Miami Open earlier this month, and given that this is his best surface, that result should have been a springboard to a great stretch ahead of a big May, which features ATP Masters 1000 events in Madrid and Rome, plus the French Open.
But we’re still waiting on that, as he lost early at the Monte-Carlo Masters, suffered a minor upset at the hands of Pablo Carreno-Busta in the quarters of last week’s Barcelona Open, and needed to rally from a set down to beat Alex Molcan in his first match in Munich.
So, I like the value in backing van de Zandschulp to make things interesting in this match, at minimum. As noted above, I do like Ruud to win, but I look for the Dutchman to take a set off of him.
For added value, you can back both players to win a set at +170 at Bovada Sportsbook. But this is a good choice to keep you covered either way, just in case Ruud capitulates and exits in straight sets.
Best Value Pick of the Day
- Basilashvili to beat Kecmanovic (+245 at BetUS)
Clay is certainly not Basilashvili’s best surface, but he won this tournament last year, so he is more than capable of getting good results on clay.
Kecmanovic is on a pretty solid run over the last couple of months, with this marking the sixth straight tournament in which he has reached the quarterfinals. Note the absence of an “at least” in there, because he has yet to advance beyond the last eight.
Four of those five losses have come in three sets, and in three of those losses, including last week’s Serbia Open loss to compatriot Novak Djokovic, Kecmanovic has won the first set then lost the last two.
If you want to play it safer, you can grab Basilashvili to win a set (-132 at BetOnline or +1.5 sets for -112 at BetUS). But with points to defend from last year’s title run, I expect Basilashvili to put forth his best effort. And that best effort will be good enough to send him through to the semis.
