In Game 1 of the WNBA playoff series between the Atlanta Dream and Dallas Wings, a number of patterns from previous meetings repeated themselves. Will those patterns play out again in tonight’s Game 2?
The second and potentially final game of the Dream vs Wings series is set for 9:00 pm ET, and you can catch all of the action on ESPN.
Thanks to a 94-82 win in Game 1 on Friday, the Wings, the #4 seed in the WNBA playoffs, are a win away from moving on to a matchup with the Las Vegas Aces, the defending WNBA champions and the #1 seed this year.
Can Atlanta extend the series and their season tonight? Or will they be powerless to stop the Wings from soaring into the second round?

Can the Dream Overcome a Game One Nightmare?
In the series opener Friday night, the Dream couldn’t have had a much better start. Thanks to making six of seven from outside and shooting 63.6% overall from the field, Atlanta led 36-21 after the first quarter.
But the Wings erased that deficit, and when it mattered most, Dallas really delivered. In the fourth quarter, they outscored Atlanta 27-12.
Rhyne Howard scored 38 points for the Dream, which set a WNBA playoff record. Unfortunately, it was ultimately overshadowed by a tale of outstanding odds and embarrassing evens for Atlanta.
In the first and third quarters, the Dream shot 53.7% overall from the field and made 10 of 15 (66.7%) from three. But in the second and fourth quarters, they were a woeful 6 of 35 (17.1%) overall from the field, including just 25% (3 of 12) from three.
And yet again, the Dream didn’t get it done against one of the WNBA’s top teams. They are now 2-7 on the road and 2-14 overall this season against the Wings, Aces, New York Liberty, and Connecticut Sun.
In making my Dream vs Wings Game 1 prediction and picks, I noted that Atlanta had scored 83 or more points just six times in their 15 regular season games against the WNBA’s top four teams, which contributed to 12 losses by seven or more points in those games.
With those notable trends in mind, I went for Wings -6.5 and the under on Atlanta’s team total in Game 1. Though it was not at all straightforward, both plays cashed to pretty up the percentages even more.
Atlanta Dream vs Dallas Wings Prediction and Picks
Prediction: Wings to win
Picks: 1) Wings -6.5 (-110 at Bovada), 2) Natasha Howard over 15.5 points (-105 at Bovada), 3) Natasha Howard over 7.5 rebounds (-125 at Bovada)
In Game 1, Howard was only 2 of 10 from the field and scored just five points.
But thanks to big games by Satou Sabally (32 points, five rebounds, four assists, four steals), Arike Ogunbowale (24 points, nine rebounds, seven assists, four steals), and Teaira McCowan (17 points, 14 rebounds, two blocks), the Wings still covered and put 94 points on the board.
I expect Howard to play a big part in helping the Wings seal the sweep (and cover the spread). If the rest of the season is an indication, the overs on both her scoring and rebounding props are worth an investment.
In the regular season, Howard failed to score in double figures only five times. In the games that followed those five instances, Howard averaged 19.4 PPG and 9.2 APG and had three 20+ point games.
The top performance was a 28-point, 12-rebound, 11-assist triple-double in a losing effort against the Chicago Sky on August 4.
