What is a total bet in a NFL game?

The Total or the Over/Under is the total amount of points scored in the game between both teams. If you select over the number, to win your bet, more points than that number has to be scored. And vice versa for the under. For example, the Vikings are playing the Dolphins and the total is set at 44.5. The over 44.5 is -120 and the under 44.5 is +100. You bet $10 on the under because you think that the offenses are going to struggle. You end up being right and they only score a combined 36 points. You win your bet and profit $10.

How do Moneylines work in NFL Betting?

The moneyline shows who the oddsmaker thinks is the favorite and gives them less favorable odds. For example, the Vikings are favored against the Raiders and are -175 on the moneyline. To win a moneyline bet, the team you bet on simply has to win the game. So if you bet $10 on the Vikings to win at -175 odds and they do indeed win, you would profit $5.71. It’s important to remember that the moneyline can adjust throughout the week before a game, but the number you bet stays the same. So if you bet the Vikings -175 on the Moneyline earlier in the week and as it gets closer to kickoff, the moneyline is -195, you still get the -175 number. The lower the number, the more likely, in the oddsmakers eyes, it is that a team will win. And vice versa on the other side. The higher the plus money odds on the underdog, the less likely it is, in the oddsmakers eyes, for that team to win.

Most NFL spreads are single digits, but double-digit spreads are seen on a regular basis. If one of the best teams in the league is playing one of the worst teams in the league or a team is dealing with significant injury concerns, the spread can be 10+ points.

The 49ers were favored, which means that they needed to win by three or more points to cover the spread. For the underdog Chiefs to cover the spread, they would have needed to win outright or lose by one or two points. The Chiefs won the game in overtime, which means they covered the +2.5.

NFL Moneyline Odds

Betting on moneylines is the other main way to bet on the outcome of NFL games.

With moneyline odds, you are betting on one team to win the game outright. So, as long as that team wins the game, whether by one point or 21 points, that is all that matters.

This example of NFL moneyline odds uses the opening moneyline odds for Super Bowl 58.

This means that for a $100 moneyline bet on the Chiefs, who won the game, would have paid out $110 in winnings.

NFL Total (Over/Under) Odds

Total odds, also known as over/under odds, are the third main way to bet on NFL games.

While betting on moneyline and spread odds involve needing a particular outcome in some way, betting on NFL over/under odds means you need a certain number of points to be scored or not be scored, regardless of who wins or by how much.

This example of NFL over/under odds uses odds from BetOnline for the 2024 regular season opener between the Chiefs and Baltimore Ravens.

If the Chiefs and Ravens combine for 47 or more points, over bets will win. If the Chiefs and Ravens combine for 46 or fewer points, under bets will win.

NFL Prop Odds

There are a wide variety of NFL props available for every game. Many NFL props are player props, but there are also team and game prop odds.

A lot of NFL player prop odds are over/under odds, like passing yards props.

This example of NFL prop odds uses odds from Bovada for Patrick Mahomes’ passing yards prop for Super Bowl 58.

NFL Futures Odds

In addition to the types of NFL game odds, you can bet on NFL futures odds at any sportsbook that has NFL odds.

Some examples of NFL futures are Super Bowl winner odds, NFL MVP odds, and NFL coach firing and hiring odds.

That is a nice windfall, but it is important to remember that only one team can win the Super Bowl. In this instance and many other instances with NFL futures, your chances of success are low relative to betting on other types of NFL odds.

If, for example, Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen is listed as questionable for the Bills’ upcoming game, the odds will reflect his uncertain status. With a healthy Allen, the Bills might be a big favorite. With Allen’s availability up in the air, Buffalo still may be favored but not by a wide margin.

But if it is confirmed later in the week that Allen will be able to play, the odds may move significantly to reflect his availability and Buffalo’s increased chances of victory.
